Day 14 – Oct 31st – Rest day in Tours

Feeling French? ('Hi, I'm Vinko and today I'm going to show you how to eat a baguette....'for you Heath)

Today was a rest day.  The knees feel a lot better and I’m hoping they are up for a little riding in the morning.  I’m aiming for Poitiers which is a good 100+km down the road and the forecast is set for rain…rain for the next 5 days in fact…so I’m praying that the meteorologists in France make mistakes sometimes.

It has been a real pleasure to be hosted by Seb and Aurelie – they are true connoisseurs of good food, wine, beer, and company.  I felt like I really hit it off on the good foot here.

Seb is super active in the bicycle world and it was great to talk more about touring and see some pics of his big bike tours.  It was also really good just to bounce my thoughts off someone that has been on a tour and understands some of my fears and frustrations…very levelling.

It would be great to stick around here for a few more days, but the road beckons and I am dying to get south to escape the weather…so time for bed, and a good ride in the morning.

The wandering idiot is a real tough guy… believe me ! He can drink many beers at evenning and be up at 8am with a good willing to hit the rain AND head wind…
So we decided this morning to come with him for few kilometers ! This was lot of fun but windy ! We made it to Thilouze (23km avg 15km/h), we had a last coffee together and left him to go back home with a nice tail wind (23km avg 30km/h!!!). I have just received a text message… He is now under a torrential rain with head wind stronger and I can see that from my window drinking a hot soup !

    GOOD LUCK
    we miss you already :-(

Lucky you, english friends, to live next door of that boy : he rides bike during 100kms under the rain and meet you with a smile, he drinks wathever, eats wathever, laughts and sleep in your oldest couch without complain. Well…what more could you ask to a friend ?!

    Hey V,
good to see your progress. Everybody in the hose is following your story and talking about it.. Funny thing about the knees, mine started really hurting on sat on a ride to London; so much in fact, I had to stop in Croydon. I will see a physio soon and try to figure out what is going on. As soon as I’ve got some news I’ll let you know. In the mean time have a look at this:

    and spin that baby!

or maybe just keep a high cadence ;-)

Hey Pietro – great to hear from you…glad to know you guys are following along. After I adjusted my seat height, the knee pain has improved massively – so it could have been that I just had terrible posture…let me know how you get along with the physio!

Sounds like you are taking this trip like a duck to water, or a brit to an ale, or an ashlander to a bong. Anyway, beautiful site and all the best for a safe and happy adventure! Istanbul needs more cyclists like you to add some sanity to this place.
